In this episode, we speak with indie author, Katherine Bitner, about her recent book and audiobook release of The Way You See Me, her adorable rescue pup, Wilbur, and life as an indie author.
In addition, I’ve included information about Charley’s K-9 Rescue, a non-profit organization that rescues at risk pit bulls and pit mixes from kill shelters and rehabilitates them so they can be adopted into families.
I had the opportunity to speak with owner, Nicole, and got more info about this amazing organization to share with our readers and listeners.
Charley’s K-9 Rescue is a veteran-founded non-profit that opened its doors September 22nd, 2020 to rescue pit bulls and pit mixes from high kill shelters in the North Carolina area. Since then, they have saved the lives of nearly 600 dogs from being euthanized and have placed them in loving homes.
After the unexpected loss of her father due to mental health complications, Nicole took the money she received from her father’s life insurance and used it to help others, founding Charley’s K-9 Rescue. One of the many things that sets this rescue apart is that Nicole did a year and a half mentorship learning about dog psychology, behavior modification, and rehabilitation.
While the timeline from rescue to adoption varies by dog, the process includes a two week “shut down” period that allow dogs to decompress, become familiar and comfortable with their surroundings and those caring for them. During this time, they receive needed medical care, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, and flea and tick treatments. Some dogs receive an additional 6-8 weeks of behavior modification training to help them recover from previous traumas and learn positive behaviors that make them great dogs for families with children and other pets. All of the dogs are temperament and dog/cat tested prior to being placed in a home. Once they are ready, the dogs enter a foster home and get to learn what life is all about – treats, toys, belly rubs, and love.
Even after a dog is adopted, Charley’s K-9 Rescue continues to check in with owners for updates and to offer any assistance they made need.

While they do various fundraisers throughout the year, the largest is taking place this Sunday, June 25th. You can take part of the Rubber Duck Race by purchasing a $5 rubber ducky on their website. They also have prizes for the Lame Duck (one that doesn’t make it all the way to the finish line) as well as a random duck pluck.
